MTHFR — How your body turns folate into the active form it can use.
MTHFR carries the instructions for an enzyme that turns the folate in your food into its active form. A common version of this gene slows that enzyme down. When it runs slower, a compound called homocysteine can build up a little, and the body's wider methylation work — used to build DNA and brain chemicals — has less active folate to draw on.
